Teaching is the profession that
creates all others; it is the most important profession, and it is responsible
for shaping and molding all future generations. As an educator, I am
responsible for teaching each individual student according to their own specific
method of learning; through differentiated instruction and multisensory activities,
I will personally accommodate each student. I believe that education should be
discovery oriented (the Socratic Method), where students inquire about topics
and then discern their own answers with the guidance of his or her teacher. My
purpose as a teacher is to direct my students so that through guidance and
prompting, they themselves can arrive at the answers. This method of teaching
has been proven to help students retain the most information, thus it is the
most effective form of teaching.
The most successful form of education requires participation on behalf of the students, and I believe that it is critical for students to have a role in their education. When students have input in the way in which they learn material, they are more likely to want to learn and to want to come to school. Students are more open-minded and will feel more comfortable in school when they participate and contribute to the discussion. The classroom should be a place where students are encouraged to take risks by raising their hands, and they should not be afraid to guess and participate for fear of getting the answer wrong.
Furthermore, education is a continual process, and students never stop learning. Maintaining a commitment to be always willing to learn is critical to the development of any individual, especially a teacher. Not only can teachers further their development through conversing with peers and parents, they can also develop further by learning from their students.
